St. Gallen – 1400th Anniversary
Thursday - Sunday
Available all months May to October 2012

According to legend, the Irish monk, St. Gall, came to the valley of the river Steinach around 612 and fell into a thorn bush. He interpreted it as a sign from above, telling him to stay. Gall built a cell and a house of prayer in that very spot, thus laying the foundation for the city and Canton of St .Gallen. His encounter with a wild bear gave rise to a bear becoming the symbol of the city. This year is the 1400th anniversary of the founding of the city and celebrations are taking place from May to October.
The charming town of St. Gallen is located in eastern Switzerland near Lake Constance and has a population of 73,000. Its most famous landmark is the UNESCO World Heritage Abbey district with its Baroque cathedral and the world famous Library (Stiftsbibliothek). It is recognised as one of the richest medieval libraries in the world and the second oldest in Europe with 140,000 documents and handwritten manuscripts some of which are over a thousand years old. It has a rich collection of manuscripts written by Irish monks.
During your stay visit the Abbey Library and Gallus Chapel, the Museum of History and Ethnography, the Natural History Museum, the Textile Museum and the Kunstmuseum. Take time to enjoy the old town – stroll around the pedestrianised centre, enjoy a coffee or fondue and sample the famous chocolate in the Chocolaterie opposite the Cathedral.
